About Chris Zamani

Chris Zamani is a physician, global health practitioner, and writer whose life spans the fault lines between poverty and privilege, science and spirit, displacement and belonging.

Raised by a single mother in California, Chris experienced homelessness as a teenager while caring for an older brother with sickle cell disease and two younger sisters. Against all odds, he graduated from UC Berkeley and earned his medical degree from Meharry Medical College, becoming the first doctor in his family.

His twenty-year dream to live and work in Africa led him to serve in Haiti, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and South Africa—where he built a farm meant to symbolize return and restoration.

When the dream unraveled within months, he was forced to confront the myth of salvation he had built his life upon and embrace the revelation it carried: that liberation is not found in service, geography, or achievement, but in the stillness that remains when everything else falls away.

Chris turned to writing to process the trauma that had carried him from poverty to success and into existential collapse. His forthcoming debut memoir The End of the Rainbow Fled  was written as an act of necessity—an urgent attempt to gather the fragments of a shattered self that gradually became a testimony to resilience and renewal.

Chris currently practices medicine in California and continues to seek truths about identity, diaspora, healing, and the intersection of inner and outer liberation. He lives in Oakland with his wife Aleea and children Anathi, Vusikhaya and Oyana.
